    METHODS AND RESULTS:
    Two alkaloids, gerrardine and cassipourine, isolated from plants of the family Rhizophoraceae, were investigated for antibacterial activity in view of their novel structure. Gerrardine was found to have activity against a number of Enterobacteriaceae strains. Activity was dependent on inoculum size but not the age of the organisms. The effect appeared to be bactericidal.
